Support activities

Strengthening local relationships

The ARISE program is supported by various activities and initiatives that complement and further strengthen local relationships. These activities realize important synergies and increase the potential for the effectiveness of ARISE.

There are several activities that support ARISE and reinforce the program’s goal to prevent and help eliminate child labor in tobacco growing communities. Two initiatives doing just that are Sponsor a Teacher, and Table for Two, which work to address the shortage of resources, increase capacity building, and improve access to nutritious food in schools.

Sponsor a Teacher

The ARISE Program has had success enrolling children in schools, but the lack of adequate facilities, materials, and support for teachers is a critical issue and needs to be resolved. Sponsor a Teacher increases the chance for lasting success of ARISE as it addresses these issues, and aims to create the conditions in which teachers and students can succeed. It provides in-service training and mobilizes resources to improve schools, building the capacity of teachers to teach well. It also encourages children to stay in school, advancing the ARISE Program’s overall goal of reducing child labor through education.

Sponsor a Teacher is implemented districts in Africa where the ARISE program operates. It specifically aims to:

  • build the capacity of school management
  • help teachers to identify and prioritize gaps and to create school improvement plans matching resources through a grant mechanism
  • build the capacity of teachers to implement curriculum and provide essential materials to equip them and their classrooms for improved success
  • encourage community ownership of schools
  • respond to other crucial problems in education identified by key local stakeholders.

Table for Two

The Table for Two program aims to support healthy meals for children in ARISE schools in Africa. The program donates the equivalent of USD $0.25 for every meal purchased or provided for employees at JTI’s canteen. It focuses on gardens at ARISE schools as a way to offer good nutrition, and ensures that children at school receive three meals per day. It also offers practical techniques and skills to ARISE schools (committees, teachers, mothers and children), to create vegetables gardens and associated water system improvements.

The overall objectives of Table for Two are:

  • to improve the nutritional status of school children through the promotion of availability and accessibility to nutritious foods such as vegetables produced in the school gardens
  • to provide students with an opportunity to learn about agriculture, food, nutrition and environmental conservation through school gardening.
