Who we are
A dynamic partnership
ARISE is a collaborative and compelling approach to ending child labor.
Founded in 2011 as part of JTI’s sustainable supply chain management, ARISE was developed with the involvement of national governments, social partners, and tobacco-growing communities. Our activities are aligned with national strategies against child labor in the target countries where we work. They strengthen the capacity of governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, communities and civil society to combat child labor.
ARISE works collaboratively with many different stakeholders to achieve one single mission – to eliminate child labor in specific tobacco-growing areas. It unites the resources and experience of its partners – Japan Tobacco International (JTI), a private-sector tobacco company and Winrock International, a US-based nonprofit organization with wide-ranging experience in agriculture, and works with other local partners on the ground. Between 2011 and 2018, the International Labour Organization (ILO), a specialist body of the United Nations, was also an ARISE partner. During that time the ILO worked with ARISE to strengthen legal and regulatory frameworks to improve labor standards in the countries where we operate.
Our partnership is a powerful proposition that brings together our different yet complementary expertise, wide-ranging experience, resources and skills. The partnership is a dynamic relationship, one that shares ownership of the program and responsibility for strategy, implementation and decision making. All of the partners work together in the field and at management level, each one focusing their efforts on their core strengths and expertise.
