Tailored activities
Even where children attend school they can be vulnerable to working in tobacco cultivation, especially when long daylight hours combine with typically short school days. ARISE focuses on the prevention of child labor in these instances by providing tailored after-school programs.
To prevent children from working on tobacco farms after school hours, ARISE provides afterschool activity and mentoring programs. The afterschool activities usually take place on school grounds.
The specific needs and the scope of the content of the afterschool programs is designed for each local community based on initial assessments. The program may include elements such as tutoring, mentoring, workshops in English, drama, arts, dance, music, theater, sports and gardening clubs, as well as vacation and holiday programs. Participation is promoted through school officials, parent-teacher associations and with the community at large.
Afterschool programs also include child labor prevention messages, delivered in engaging and accessible ways. We encourage local people to take ownership of and responsibility for these programs, with volunteer mentors recruited from among local teachers and other members of the community.
Landcare training
The Model Farm School training course teaches teenagers technical skills, and gives them the opportunity to create their own demonstration plots.
