New income potential

Expotigre is a major agricultural expo in southern Brazil. ARISE mothers trained in baking as part of the income generation training program held a stand to sell products. The day reinforced their new income earning potential.

Expotigre was a major agricultural product and farming machinery expo that was held in the Parque Atílio Pasa from 31 October to 6 November 2013. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Arroio do Tigre region and set the stage for the first Kolonie Fest – a large area where farmers could sell their goods alongside other agribusinesses. The local municipality invited women from the ARISE income generation training program to participate.

The women sold colorful breads made with wheat, corn, rye, and whole-wheat flour, as well as cakes, cookies, biscuits, pizzas, empanadas, and jams made from various fruits. The ARISE program coordinators worked with the women to provide guidance on sales and presentation, as well as advising on regulatory requirements such as packaging and labeling in accordance with the Brazilian Food Safety Agency (ANVISA) standards and safe transportation. Seven groups of women, one from each community, were invited to participate during the expo, with a different community being represented on different days.

The mothers believe that the experience was an enriching one both socially and economically. When discussing with the ARISE coordinators, the women commented that the training course was highly beneficial and they shared their excitement about the income-earning opportunities they now have.

ARISE aims to end child labor in communities where JTI sources tobacco leaf. We work with those directly affected and with others who have the power to change things. Our initiatives are developed and delivered in collaboration with tobacco-growing communities, social partners and governments.
