Improved learning environments
Learning environments can play an important role in the quality of education a child receives. In Malawi we conducted an assessment to determine the additional needs of the schools we support. We provided materials to alleviate some of problems identified.
ARISE supports 11 schools in Malawi – ten primary and one junior primary – in Lilongwe and Ntcheu District. In an effort to improve the learning environments for children attending these schools, we conducted an assessment to determine the additional needs of the schools. Almost all schools had the same problems, but they differed in magnitude. Amongst other things a shortage of desks, classrooms, learning materials was identified, as was a lack of safe drinking water, electricity and first aids kits. The assessment was performed through participatory consultation with school committees, parent-teacher associations, village development committees, head teachers, primary education advisors, and district education officials. Focus group discussions and interviews were used to assess the needs of each school, and a standard assessment form was used to collate information. ARISE provided materials to the schools to alleviate some of the problems identified, and community leaders have been encouraged to be proactive and resourceful in seeking support from government and other organizations. Amongst the materials provided were 150 desks, 84 50-litre water tanks, and 864 textbooks.
