New classrooms for Chali School

New classrooms for Chali School

By their very nature quality learning environments are places children want to be. It’s one of the reasons why we invest in school infrastructure, improve buildings and construct sanitation facilities and housing for teachers. From our experience improving Migungumalo Primary School in Uyui District Tanzania, we know that school attendance levels increase to well above regional averages, more children pass into higher levels of education and schools significantly move up the district’s school league table.

Armed with this knowledge, last year we reviewed the primary school in Chali, which is one of the first schools where we implemented ARISE in Tanzania. We were so effective getting children to go to school that by January 2018 there were 489 pupils and the school had quickly become too small. Classrooms were brimming with children eager to learn and teachers eventually had to take their lessons outside under the trees. Our after school programs were also not being as effective as possible due to the lack of facilities.

So we decided it was time to create change. In November 2018 we constructed a new building to house three new classrooms and an office, and JTI purchased 150 new desks. Each classroom can accommodate 60 children, and the school runs two sessions a day. Already the enrolments of grade one pupils has increased from 57 to 109 pupils, and we are excited about what lies ahead.

ARISE aims to end child labor in communities where JTI sources tobacco leaf. We work with those directly affected and with others who have the power to change things. Our initiatives are developed and delivered in collaboration with tobacco-growing communities, social partners and governments.
