ARISE expertise on the national radar

The expertise of the ARISE team on child labor issues came to national attention after it was sought out from the Tanzanian Government late last year on a review of its National Action Plan (NAP) on Child Labor Elimination.
In consultation with various stakeholders, and under the auspices and technical support of the International Labor Organization (ILO), ARISE was a key authority in the review, which also brought together input from 12 ministries across government.
It was decided there was no need for a separate NAP for child labor elimination as there is a new National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children (NPA-VAWC 2017/2018 – 2021/2022) that consolidates what was previously eight plans into one cohesive NPA. Instead, key partners of child labor elimination groups designed a five-year national strategy to actualize, implement and feed child labor principals into the new consolidated plan.
The new structural arrangement will create links between grassroots local government and national government and activate all ministers into its implementation.
Additionally, the five-year plan sets a target of reducing child labor from 29% to 9%.
Through ARISE, the ILO’s involvement ensures the national strategy, which was endorsed by the National Inter-sector Coordination Committee (NISCC) on child elimination on 14 December 2017, aligns to all global conventions that have been ratified locally.
As an official participant in negotiations, ARISE is an active stakeholder at a national level and our specialist input is highly regarded and valued.
ARISE aims to end child labor in communities where JTI sources tobacco leaf. We work with those directly affected and with others who have the power to change things. Our initiatives are developed and delivered in collaboration with tobacco-growing communities, social partners and governments.
